Two of the five finalists who were being considered for the position of dean of the School of Law have recently withdrawn their candidacies, according to the Maryland Daily Record.

One of the candidates, Leah Ward Sears, was Georgia’s first woman and youngest Supreme Court justice.  First appointed in 1992 as the nation’s first black, female chief justice, she faces a term-limit that prevents her from continuing in her current position.  She publicly withdrew her name from consideration on February 12 after deciding to “pursue other opportunities,” according to a court spokesperson.

On February 18, a second candidate, Mark A. Sargent, currently the law school dean at Villanova University, withdrew his candidacy after indicating that his family preferred him to remain at Villanova.

Three candidates remain in contention to replace outgoing Dean Karen H. Rothenberg when she steps down on June 30.  They include Wendy Collins Perdue, professor of law and associate dean at Georgetown University; Phoebe A. Haddon, professor of law at Temple University; and Linda S. Mullenix, a professor at the University of Texas School of Law.

After visits to the campus by the candidates, the members of the law school’s Dean Search Committee will submit evaluations and assessments of the finalists to UMB President David Ramsay, who will select the new dean.
