Project Jumpstart’s Tuesday and Friday food distribution evenings have relocated to the kitchen in the Student Center on North Pine Street. The twice weekly event had previously been held in the lobby of Pharmacy Hall, but the recent renovations in that area required PJS to make the move several weeks ago. The group currently plans to stay in the Student Center until construction of the new Student Center on Lombard Street is completed.
Food distribution was initiated by Department of Gerontology graduate student Dan Andersen in 2005. At that time, Andersen and several friends distributed food to homeless persons in downtown Baltimore in the areas surrounding the University of Maryland Campus. Since then, the organization has grown significantly, receiving supported group status from the USGA and doubling the food distribution events to twice weekly.
PJS also accepts donations of clothing and toiletries. Previously, donation boxes were located in the Pharmacy Hall Lobby, but they are currently without a location. Donations can still be made, however, by contacted Powell or other members of PJS.
With Andersen’s recent graduation, the organization has gained a new president, Sabrina Powell. Powell’s primary goal for the upcoming year is to recruit and involve more students in PJS activities, though fundraising events may also be on the schedule.
