GPILS Announces its Award Winners for the Academic Year 2007-08

Earlier this month, the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) announced its award winners for the 2007-08 academic year. Recipients of these awards were chosen by an awards committee chaired by Achsah Keegan, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The goal of these awards is to highlight and recognize the outstanding achievements of graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and faculty members.
 
Shayna Rich, a student in the Epidemiology program received the Outstanding Ph.D. Scholar award. This designation is awarded to students within their first 4 semesters of study, having an outstanding academic record and showing great potential as scientists. In addition, Mora Bamgboye from the Program in Molecular Medicine and Teresa Hsi, Microbiology & Immunology received Honorable Mentions in this category.
 
The Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Project Award for the best dissertation project was conferred upon Xiao-Ling Li from Molecular Medicine, while Dr. Joe Mauban, Department of Physiology received the Outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar award, for showing "exceptional promise as an independent investigator."
 
The GPILS Teacher of the Year Award and the Otani Award were bestowed upon Dr. Martin Flajnik and John Teijaro, respectively both from the Program in Microbiology & Immunology. Students and faculty unanimously chose Dr. Martin Flajnik for being an "outstanding educator" and a dedicated researcher. The Otani award, established in memory of Elaine Miye Otani by her family, is given each year to a student "who shows outstanding promise as an independent investigator [and who has attempted] to improve the quality of academic studies among fellow students in GPILS."
 
The Annual Awards Ceremony will be held on September 24, 2008, at which time these awards will be distributed to their recipients.
