UMB students typically go to the Health Science and Human Services Library (HSHSL) for a few specific purposes:  to borrow a book, study, and look up reference and research materials.  On December 12 and 13, HSHSL broadens its repertoire to include yoga and a Nintendo Wii game day as a study break for students.

Although HSHSL has done breakfasts and contests in the past, these activities mark the first time that it will offer two yoga demos and a game day as part of its final exam week events.  According to M.J. Tooey, executive director of HSHSL, the goal is to offer an alternate location to the Student Center on Pine Street for students studying for final exams.

“I would really like them to have an opportunity to relax and refuel,” said Tooey.  “From our perspective, anything we can do to let the students know we’re here to help and support them and that we really are a friendly place is good for us.”

The yoga demos will be led by staff from the UMB Athletic Center.  In addition to the Nintendo Wii, other more traditional games such as Jenga, Uno, Taboo, Scategories, Hungry Hungry Hippos, and playing cards will be available for student use.

Tooey hopes that students will leave the events feeling refreshed and reenergized before returning to study.  “And we’re hoping to prevent deep venous thrombosis [in students] from sitting too long [while studying],” said Tooey with a smile.
