On October 11, University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) President David Ramsay and Mrs. Ramsay will host their 12th annual Founders Week Student Cookout.

The cookout will take place on the School of Nursing (SON) courtyard from noon to 1:30pm and include customary foods such as grilled chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers to be served by the Ramsays, vice presidents of the university, and deans, as well as some student affairs deans, of each of the schools.  Tickets to the cookout are free but must be picked up by students from the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL), the university bookstore, or the student affairs offices of each school no later than Friday, October 5, 2007.

The Student Cookout is one of several events celebrating Founders Week, a tradition initiated by the Ramsays twelve years ago with the intent of coalescing a common entity among the schools and departments of the university.

While the university was originally founded in December 1807 as the School of Medicine, Founders Week has typically been celebrated in October to take advantage of warmer weather, said Nancy Gordon, Senior Director for University Events.

The Founders Week tradition has undergone some changes in its history.  During the first several years, the student event for Founders Week was a breakfast, but this was changed to a cookout in the late afternoon to improve student attendance.  A new approach is being tried this year, with the cookout being held midday for the first time.

In the past, the Student Cookout was held on the lawn of Davidge Hall.  This year, it has been moved to the SON courtyard to highlight the construction of the new Campus Center.  “We are hoping to have some visuals on display so that students can see all the exciting plans for the new Center,” said Gordon.

According to Gordon, the Ramsays are looking forward to hosting the event for students.  “The cookout is definitely a favorite,” she said.  “It is a very upbeat atmosphere with great food and music and hopefully magnificent weather.”
