On April 7, the Maryland legislature approved of $62 million to fund a seven-story addition to the aging, 25-year-old Pharmacy Hall. The 112,565 square-foot addition, to be built on land currently comprised of a parking lot on the north side of Pharmacy Hall, will include new lecture halls, a patient interaction laboratory, and additional clinical and translational research space.

On Monday, March 31, 2008, almost 400 people gathered for the opening of the University of Maryland BioPark Building II and the groundbreaking for Building III. The event was marked by speeches from those who have been involved with the initiative throughout its course of development and was followed by a tour of the new BioPark building.

Annual Event Hosted by the Indian Association

The Indian Association hosted its annual Holi celebration on Friday, March 28 in the MSTF atrium. The event is celebrated at the end of February or the beginning of March on the day of a full moon. While the event has roots in the Hindu religion, it has long been celebrated by all of India and wherever Indians are found across the world to welcome the spring season.

On April 3rd the MSTF atrium was the venue for World Fest 2008, an annual celebration of the worldly delights of food, fashion and music. Bringing together students and staff of all nationalities and cultures the event is a definite highlight of the UMB social events calendar.

The United Students of African Decent (USAD) hosted a collaborative event with Project Jumpstart the evening of March 25th at Peace & A Cup of Joe. The two groups have organized a series of talks entitled "Jabbering @ Joe’s" to address the issue of homelessness in the Baltimore area.
Award is the First for School of Pharmacy Faculty

Dr. Julie Zito, a research scientist in the Pharmaceutical Health Services Research department in the School of Pharmacy, was recently awarded a 2008 University Systems of Maryland Regent's Award for Scholarship, Research, and Creativity. Zito’s award marks the first time a member of the School of Pharmacy has been the recipient of a University Systems award.

Annual Research Day Showcases Pharmacy Student Projects The Pharmacy Student Research Showcase took place on Tuesday April 8th from 11:00am to 5:00pm in the MSTF atrium. In previous years, the event had been held in smaller venues, but this year the larger area was booked due to the increased interest in participation.
