On October 20, 2007, the School of Nursing (SON) held its 2nd annual Friends and Family day. According to Dr. Davenport, a professor at the school of nursing, the purpose of the event was to "welcome the family and friends of the nursing students to the campus and give them a flavor of what the student did with their time as a student nurse." She said that the Nursing student government association was the force behind the implementation of the event.

Nobel laureate Sir Paul Nurse gave a talk titled "Controlling the Cell Cycle" on the afternoon of 29th October at the MSTF auditorium. The talk was hosted by the Department of Pharmacology as part of the Krantz lecture series at the medical school wherein prominent scientists invited each year for sharing their scientific expertise with the UMB scientific and medical community.

Dr. David Ramsay, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), wrote an op-ed entitled "State Funding for Universities Pays Dividends" which was published in the Baltimore Sun on October 30. In his article, Ramsay supported Governor Martin O' Malley's plan to increase state funding to higher education by emphasizing that Maryland's economy is heavily dependent upon the revenue generated by universities in the state.
